Roma: os primeiros passos da Dreamwalker

Há lugares que visitamos.

Outros passam a fazer parte de quem somos.

Quando imaginei o conceito da Dreamwalker, pensei nas pessoas que caminham em direção aos próprios sonhos. Pessoas que entendem que viajar não é apenas mudar de lugar, mas permitir que cada destino transforme um pouco a maneira como enxergamos o mundo.

Hoje, olhando para trás, percebo que essa história começou em Roma.

Minha primeira viagem aconteceu em 2018, quando fui à Europa para participar de um congresso. Entre as opções de conexão, escolhi uma que me permitisse passar cerca de 24 horas na Cidade Eterna.

Parecia pouco.

Acabou sendo suficiente para mudar completamente a forma como eu via as viagens.

Roma tem um efeito curioso sobre quem a visita. Se você ficar apenas um dia, vai querer voltar. Se permanecer três dias, irá embora planejando a próxima viagem. Se passar uma semana, descobrirá que ainda conhece muito pouco. Um mês, um ano... Roma sempre encontra uma maneira de surpreender.

Foi exatamente isso que aconteceu comigo.

Em apenas um dia caminhei por ruas que pareciam ter parado no tempo, admirei monumentos que durante anos conheci apenas pelos livros de História, experimentei uma gastronomia inesquecível e descobri que, em Roma, muitas vezes o maior atrativo não é visitar um monumento, mas simplesmente caminhar sem destino enquanto o sol colore pedras que atravessaram mais de dois mil anos de história.

Também aprendi uma curiosidade importante logo na primeira visita: em algumas áreas históricas da cidade não é permitido sentar nas calçadas ou sobre determinados monumentos, podendo inclusive haver multas. Foi uma dica que recebi durante a viagem e que vale compartilhar.

Mas nenhuma regra é capaz de diminuir o encanto daquela primeira tarde em Roma.

Ela apenas reforçou uma certeza que tenho até hoje: algumas cidades não se conhecem. Elas se vivem.

Este é apenas o primeiro artigo sobre Roma. Ao longo do Dreamwalker Travel Journal vou compartilhar as experiências de cada uma das vezes em que retornei à Cidade Eterna, porque cada viagem revelou uma Roma diferente. A primeira foi um dia. As próximas tiveram outros ritmos, outras histórias e outras descobertas.

Se você tiver apenas um dia, como aconteceu comigo, minha recomendação é começar pelo Coliseu, pelo Fórum Romano e pelo Monte Palatino. Reserve os ingressos com antecedência. Além de evitar filas, você garante uma das experiências arqueológicas mais impressionantes do planeta.

Depois siga caminhando até o Panteão e continue em direção à Fontana di Trevi.

Não tenha pressa.

Roma recompensa quem anda devagar.

Sente-se em uma praça. Peça uma boa massa italiana. Brinde a viagem com um Aperol Spritz e permita que o tempo desacelere.

Uma dica que aprendi nessa primeira visita — e que hoje levo para praticamente toda a Itália — é nunca seguir o fluxo o tempo inteiro.

Os grandes monumentos são indispensáveis, mas basta virar uma rua, entrar em uma pequena viela ou caminhar duas quadras além do movimento para encontrar cafeterias familiares, pequenas trattorias e lugares que dificilmente aparecem nos roteiros tradicionais.

As maiores descobertas costumam estar escondidas logo depois da esquina.

Da mesma forma, evite escolher restaurantes exatamente em frente aos principais pontos turísticos. Normalmente são mais caros e nem sempre entregam a melhor experiência. Caminhar alguns minutos costuma ser recompensado com comida mais autêntica, atendimento acolhedor e preços muito mais justos.

Entre as lembranças daquela primeira viagem existe uma que nunca mudou.

O Vale Gelato.

Foi ali que experimentei um dos melhores gelatos da minha vida. Desde então, toda vez que retorno a Roma, essa parada tornou-se praticamente um ritual. Algumas tradições simplesmente merecem ser repetidas.

Se a sua conexão exigir uma noite na cidade, vale considerar uma hospedagem próxima à Roma Termini. Na minha primeira viagem, fiquei no Al Viminale Hill Inn & Hotel, na Via del Viminale, 38. A localização facilitou tudo: chegar do aeroporto, deixar a bagagem e explorar boa parte da cidade caminhando. Para uma conexão longa ou um roteiro de apenas um dia, considero uma excelente escolha.

Aliás, uma observação importante.

Todas as recomendações deste artigo são baseadas exclusivamente nas minhas experiências pessoais. São lugares onde estive, que gostei e que voltaria sem pensar duas vezes. Porque algumas cidades não terminam quando a viagem acaba.

Elas continuam caminhando conosco.

E foi exatamente assim que nasceu o Dreamwalker.

Rome: The First Steps of the Dreamwalker

There are places we visit.

Others become part of who we are.

When I first imagined the concept of the Dreamwalker, I thought about those who walk toward their dreams. People who understand that traveling is more than simply changing places—it is allowing each destination to transform the way we see the world.

Looking back today, I realize that this story began in Rome.

My first trip took place in 2018, when I traveled to Europe to attend an academic conference. Among the available flight connections, I chose one that allowed me to spend about 24 hours in the Eternal City.

It didn't seem like much.

Yet it was enough to completely change the way I experienced travel.

Rome has a curious effect on those who visit it. Spend just one day there, and you'll want to return. Stay for three days, and you'll leave already planning your next visit. Spend a week, and you'll realize you've barely scratched the surface. A month, a year... Rome always finds a new way to surprise you.

That's exactly what happened to me.

In just one day, I wandered through streets that seemed frozen in time, admired monuments I had known only from history books, enjoyed unforgettable cuisine, and discovered that in Rome, the greatest attraction is often not visiting a monument at all, but simply walking without a destination while the setting sun bathes stones that have witnessed more than two thousand years of history.

I also learned an important local tip during my very first visit: in some historic areas of the city, sitting on sidewalks or certain protected monuments is prohibited and may even result in a fine. It was advice I received during my trip, and it's worth passing along.

But no rule could diminish the magic of that first afternoon in Rome.

It only reinforced something I still believe today:

Some cities are not meant to be known.

They are meant to be lived.

This is only the first article about Rome. Throughout the Dreamwalker Travel Journal, I'll share the experiences from each time I returned to the Eternal City, because every visit revealed a different Rome. The first lasted only one day. The others unfolded at different rhythms, with different stories and new discoveries.

If you only have one day—as I did—my recommendation is to begin with the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Reserve your tickets in advance. Besides avoiding long lines, you'll experience one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites on Earth.

Then continue on foot to the Pantheon before making your way to the Trevi Fountain.

Don't rush.

Rome rewards those who know how to slow down.

Sit in a piazza. Order a delicious plate of Italian pasta. Toast your journey with an Aperol Spritz, and let time move a little more slowly.

One lesson I learned on that first visit—and one I now carry with me throughout Italy—is never to follow the crowd all the time.

The major landmarks are essential, but all it takes is turning down a side street, walking through a narrow alley, or venturing a couple of blocks beyond the busiest areas to discover family-run cafés, charming trattorias, and hidden places that rarely appear in traditional travel guides.

The greatest discoveries are usually waiting just around the next corner.

Likewise, avoid choosing restaurants located directly in front of the main tourist attractions. They are often more expensive and don't always offer the best experience. Walking just a few extra minutes is usually rewarded with more authentic food, warmer hospitality, and much better value.

Among all the memories from that first trip, one has never changed.

Vale Gelato.

It was there that I enjoyed one of the best gelatos of my life. Ever since then, every visit to Rome has included a stop there. Some traditions simply deserve to be repeated.

If your itinerary requires spending a night in the city, consider staying near Roma Termini. During my first trip, I stayed at the Al Viminale Hill Inn & Hotel, on Via del Viminale, 38. Its location made everything easier: arriving from the airport, dropping off my luggage, and exploring much of the city on foot. For a long layover or a one-day itinerary, I consider it an excellent choice.

By the way, an important note.

Perhaps that's why I always want to return.

Because some cities don't end when the journey is over.

They continue walking beside us.

And that's exactly where the Dreamwalker was born.
